What is a Microprocessor?


The microprocessor is a digital electronic device in which millions of transistors are prepared using the integrated circuit. It is used as the main part of a computer, and you can also call it CPU (central processing unit).

Before microprocessor came, CPUs were created by connecting different electronic components. And the CPU of that time was very big like big seminar hall.

There are two big companies in the word that produce or make microprocessor, Intel and AMD. Intel is the most preferred company by people. It has been made many version of processor such as Pentium 1, Pentium 2, Pentium 3, Pentium 4, dual core etc. The latest update of Intel is core i9. These companies also look at on processor size they are trying to make as small as by size.

Now let's get back to the point.

There is an internal bus installed, to make a connection between the internal cache memory and a microprocessor, It is also called as a backside bus. And the Main bus (Front side bus ) is used to transfer data from CPUmemory, and AGP.


Let's describe some words.
  • Bus -  In the language of computing, bus (bus) is a group of physical connections that are made up of wire, circuit etc. To complete communication, it connects the different hardware to each other.
  • AGP -  Accelerated graphics port is a post designed for video cards and 3D acceleration. It was developed by Intel in 1997. AGP introduced to point to point channel that allows making a direct connection between graphics controller to the system memory.

Components of Microprocessor

There are various components in CPU or microprocessor. And that programs are run on commands and to run the commands it needs mathematical operations. Some applications like video, audio, games etc are run by a microprocessor.

ALU (Arithmetic logical unit) - Here actual execution instruction take place during the processing operation. it performs all arithmetic calculations and takes a logical decision. It can easily compare, count, shift or other logical activities. All such calculation and comparisons are done in this unit. It takes data from the memory unit and returns information to the memory unit if storage requires. It calculates very fast.

CU (Control Unit) -  It manages coordinates operations of all other components of the computer system. It also performs the following functions.

  • It retrieves instruction or data from memory.
  • It decodes instruction.
  • It coordinates the time sequence of instruction among various component of the system.
  • It determines the requirement of storage and takes action according to it.
  • it also fetches the instruction from main memory.

Memory Unit - The storage unit of computer system stores data for following purposes

  • Processing data and instruction 
  • storage of temporary result (intermediate data storage)
  • Permanent storage for future requirement (Secondary storage)
